Rhona Smith: Violence against women in Cambodia continues to be of great concern

12.04.16

United Nations Special Rapporteur, Rhona Smith, has urged the Cambodian government to strengthen women’s rights in the country.

“Of great concern to me is the prevalence of violence against women, which continues to present itself as a pervasive human rights violation in Cambodia and women who have suffered sexual and gender-based violence encounter barriers when perpetrators should be brought swiftly to justice,” Rhona said.

A review of the Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence and Victims Protection, and fair prosecution of alleged prosecutors are some of the measures Rhona recommended to ensure Cambodia’s response to domestic violence meets international standards.
