Women becoming more confident in reporting sexual violence in Fiji

17.08.16

Shamima Ali from the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre said women are beginning to feel more confident in reporting sexual violence.

Statistics recently released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions showed that 45 incidents were recorded and 24 people were charged in July.

Shamima said:

“My centres tell me that actually people are reporting a lot more and they’re getting more confident about reporting and police responses are improving, there are many more people speaking out against such crimes so people are getting encouraged to come out and report. But I’d also like to say that there’s 45 cases that we’ve seen, we still believe that this is about ten percent of what’s really happening.”
