Media in Fiji

22.07.15

In recent times, Fijian Parliament has voted in favour of amending the Media Industry Development Decree 2010 to remove the threat of fines against journalists who breach the Decree.

“The threat and fear of fines may well be removed from journalists but it remains for the publishers, editors and organisations that employ them. As such the media industry remains censored,” says Citizen’s Constitutional Forum Programme Manager Ken Cokanasiga.

Funding Leadership and Opportunities for Women program partner FemLINKPACIFIC operate as a community media broadcaster, promoting the voices to women in their community as they speak out about issues which are often ignored or invisible in their local commercial media. Challenging censorship and broadening the public conversation will help to bring concerns for gender equality into the mainstream.
