Fiji’s Minister for Women says it’s time to change old mind-sets towards women in society

14.06.16

Fiji’s Minister for Women is calling for a change in how we think about the roles of women in Fijian society.

Rosy Akbar said:

“There is a tide of support for gender equality and the signs are telling us that the time is right for Fiji in 2016.”

Shamima Ali of Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre said:

“We have to start learning to be equal players in the field and having equal citizenry and things like that. We have the internalisation where men and women start believing this is the way the world is. We have to start teaching gender and gender awareness, gender sensitisation and human rights in our schools if we want to really bring about changes.”
