Fiji counts cost of domestic violence

Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre coordinator Shamima Ali outlined the economic impact of domestic violence during a “Ending Violence Against Women” workshop in Labasa.

Ms Ali said research done by University of Fiji, Professor Biman Prasad, has estimated the cost to be at $498m.

“These figures are alarming because such a huge amount of money is needed by the nation to improve the livelihoods of its people and their access to services. The nation loses more annually because these types of research are based on reported cases of violence and there are a huge number of cases that go unreported out there,” she said.
