Women’s World Cup: Former Matildas star Sally Shipard describes ‘different world’ women’s team lives in due to pay discrepancy
‘The Professional Footballers Association (PFA) raised the issue on Wednesday morning, revealing Matildas players would received $500 per group stage match played at the World Cup, while the Socceroos received $7,500 for the equivalent matches last year.
Shipard said it was a challenge for Australia’s female footballers to earn enough money outside the game to sustain them, but the struggle had become second nature to them.
“It’s all we ever knew. We knew we’d treat our football as a part time pursuit and on the side we would have study or work a part time job, and that way it would accumulate to a full time pursuit,” she said.’
