Women’s roles in Myanmar are complex, and discriminatory cultural practices are often worsened by a lack of awareness.

Women make up an enormous portion of the labour force in the country, yet this line of work leaves them vulnerable to the risks of loosely-regulated environments.

According to labour activist Mar Mar Oo, women are often unaware of their rights. As social structures see women as subservient to men, they also earn less for the same work.
