Social media encourages feminist discussion in South Asia

Women in South Asia are reclaiming safe spaces, posting photos of themselves accompanied with the hashtag #GirlsAtDhabas. Dhabas, which are roadside food and tea stalls, are just one of many public spaces that women are traditionally discouraged to occupy.

In many parts of the world, women being alone in a public space is uncommon. The creator of the movement, Sadia Khatri, says that women “aren’t supposed to loiter”. She hopes that this small statement will encourage feminist discussion and “make dents” in cultural norms.
