Rwanda’s Ni Nyampinga magazine redefines the role of girls

27.08.15

The magazine Ni Nyampinga is empowering girls in Rwandan communities. Created by teenage girls, it is shaping passionate, determined, thoughtful and ambitious young women. Issues have included features on females occupying typically male roles, from electricians and plumbers, to playing musical instruments only men traditionally play.

The magazine also creates a platform to discuss issues like gender equality and reproductive health.

Ni Nyampinga ambassador Diane Uwamahoro says that readers have become inspired to pursue careers as pilots or dentists, having developed the confidence to tackle these challenges as a result of the magazine’s encouragement.
