United Nations CSW59 Side Event: Transforming how we Measure Poverty

A panel discussion to introduce the Individual Deprivation Measure, a new tool to better understand the differences in how men and women experience poverty.

Currently the world only measures the poverty of households, not individuals, with poverty measures mainly focused on money; however, there are other factors that also matter to poor women and men. This side event will introduce The Individual Deprivation Measure (IDM), which is the first poverty measurement tool in the world to enable accurate sex-disaggregation of data, based on the views of poor women and men.

The panel will outline the methodology of the IDM and discuss how Governments and policy makers can use the tool to better understand the differences in how women and men experience poverty, so as to address poverty more effectively.
