From economic growth to a wellbeing economy: notes for a feminist foreign policy

In this Issues Paper, Sarah Cook and Naila Kabeer explore the idea of a feminist economy of wellbeing and how such an economy might be measured. They consider the limits of growth, and of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), as both goal and measure of progress, and feminist perspectives on these debates. They examine moves towards wellbeing as an alternative and ways to measure it.

In making the case for a feminist approach to a wellbeing economy as part of securing a future for people and planet, Cook and Kabeer note opportunities for cross-movement links in mobilising political and policy will to move “beyond GDP’”. The Paper provides a resource for feminist foreign policy makers, who have a critical role to play in shaping and sharing ideas that question growth and provide alternatives, and in supporting broader movements for change.
