Increasing women MPs in the Solomon Islands

19.10.15

Despite efforts to increase female political participation in the Solomon Islands, only three women have been elected as members of parliament since independence 37 years ago.

Terence Wood at the Development Policy Centre proposes that aid should go towards helping women to enhance their reputations within their own communities. This, Dr Wood believes, would not only give women the confidence to become political leaders, but would also raise their public profiles and provide a better chance of becoming elected.

Listen to Dr Wood discuss this approach on Pacific Beat on the ABC News website.
