Imagine being told you must suffer verbal and physical attacks in silence.
Being told it is not your place to speak out against injustice.
Many young girls in Fiji experience attitudes like this.
Violence and discrimination against women in Fiji is shockingly common, with 7 in 10 women experiencing gender-based physical or sexual abuse by the time they are 15 years old.
IWDA partner Fiji Women’s Rights Movement (FWRM) is committed to overcoming discrimination against women and girls by supporting a powerful, intergenerational women’s rights movement in Fiji.
FWRM’s Grow Inspire Relate Lead and Succeed (GIRLS) program creates opportunities for 10 to 12-year-old girls to work together and speak out against gender stereotypes, bullying and sexism.
The program uses creative methods like theatre and storytelling to build girls’ confidence and knowledge of their human rights.
“The program has taught me so much, I never knew there was such a thing as equality, I never knew there was such a thing as rights. I never knew that there is gender inequality in our communities” – a recent graduate, GIRLS.
Your donation is helping to provide girls in Fiji with a platform to speak out about their safety, security and human rights issues.
By creating opportunities where female leaders share their knowledge and skills with young women, FWRM is making space for girls to learn from role models.
With your support, more girls in Fiji can go on to become leaders in their community and advocate for positive change.
