Gender equality in agriculture is essential for sustainable development
Worldwide, women make up 43% of the agricultural labour force. Focusing on Eastern Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, that amount rises to over 50%.
Despite the important role female agricultural labourers play, these women in developing countries do not have access to or control over land and productive resources.
There are significant barriers that female farmers face that men do not, which are not limited to land ownership and the competing priorities of unpaid care work women are expected to undertake.
