Finding the formula for gender equality and inclusive governance in Timor-Leste
Counterpart’s Ba Distrito project is reaching out to some of Timor-Leste’s most vulnerable populations to teach them about their legal rights. This approach will take gender equality into consideration from the outset.
A survey has found that Timorese women are less satisfied than men with community-level systems for resolving disputes. In response to this, Ba Distrito began trainings on women’s rights and access to justice, focusing on legal issues such as domestic violence and property rights. They will also use information from the survey to develop training programs for council members and village leaders, in order to strengthen their abilities to respond to and assist citizens.
