Fiji addresses gender inequality through sport

The Fiji Volleyball Federation (FVF), in partnership with Volleyball Australia and Australian Aid, is addressing gender inequality by promoting the involvement of women and girls in sport. This volleyball program aims to empower women and encourage participation, while also reducing health risks. Females from the ages of 17 to 75 are taking part in the program.

According to research conducted by Fiji Volleyball last year, sport is one of the spaces in which women and girls are critically underrepresented.

“Sport is an effective platform to equip women and girls with leadership skills for other arenas such as civic engagement or professional life,” said Natasha Stott Despoja, Australia’s Ambassador for Women and Girls.

“Through sport, women and girls find safe places to meet, acquire new networks, develop a sense of identity, access new opportunities and become more engaged in community life.”
