Driving women’s empowerment

23.09.15

Priyadarshini Taxi Service is an initiative of entrepreneur and social activist Susieben Shah, training and employing women to drive taxis in Mumbai, India. This project began with the aim of empowering economically disadvantaged women, to improve their standard of living and the financial conditions of their family.

Grants for this initiative have been provided by India’s Ministry of Women & Child Development, allowing training to be provided to women free of charge.

Many of the Priyadarshini women have gained confidence and independence by becoming sole bread-winners of their families, and are happy to have the opportunity to work in a supportive environment.

Watch this video to meet Dhanlaxmi Devendra, one of Priyadarshini’s drivers, on the Guardian.
