Cyclone Winston’s impact on Fijian women

April 12, 2016

Pregnant women isolated by the aftermath of Cyclone Winston are struggling to access the medical support they need.
Of the 40 per cent of Fijians impacted by the storm, 5,600 are pregnant women.
Significant damage to hospitals has meant pregnant women needing medical attention have had to travel further or are unable to access any at all.
“It is a plain and simple truth that disasters reinforce, perpetuate and increase gender inequality, making bad situations worse for women,” said Margaret Wahlstrom, former Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction.
