Changing the Leadership Landscape
In over three decades of independence, only three women have overcome the barriers that prevent women from participating in politics in the Solomons. Currently, Honourable Freda Soria Comua is the sole female figure in Parliament, outnumbered 50 to one.
While there are a number of factors that contribute to the reluctance of women entering the political domain, stemming from both men and women, this severe underrepresentation indicates that more work needs be done to address such resistance and break down the barriers. Advocacy efforts that aim to increase women’s propensity to pursue leadership underpins IWDA’s Funding Leadership and Opportunities for Women program, with the ultimate goal of changing the landscape for women in leadership.
