The DRC refuge transforming the lives of female survivors
Maison de la Femme (House of Women), Sister Angelique Namaika’s refuge in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is transforming the lives of young women who have survived abduction, sexual abuse and slavery.
Sister Angelique says that women who have escaped or been abandoned often feel ostracised. The activities at the refuge help them to recover from trauma, gain self-esteem, and connect with one another. The women are also taught skills that allow them to gain a sense of purpose as well as an income.
