Restrictions on women in Saudi Arabia

19.01.16

Despite the recent election of 18 women to municipal councils for the first time in the country’s history, heavy restrictions for the women of Saudi Arabia remain.

Such limitations prevent females from driving a car, swimming, and going anywhere without a male chaperone.

Despite the country historically having some of the most repressive attitudes towards females, Human Rights Watch’s Rothna Begum says women in Saudi Arabia are highly educated and qualified.

“They don’t want to be left in the dark.”
