Measuring gender equality
Statistical systems and initiatives have strengthened our understanding of remaining gender inequalities in a number of areas, as well as what policy interventions have worked (or not worked) to reduce them. Demographic and health surveys also give insight into the prevalence of and attitudes towards violence against women.
Data is able to show how laws, practices and attitudes shape women’s abilities to take advantage of their rights and economic opportunities. More reliable data and innovative methodologies to measure the future impact of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be able to capture and track female empowerment within all aspects of society around the world.
