The level of fitness and endurance required, as well as its legacy as an ancient tradition, makes Lethwei very empowering for women, says Moe Pwint Oo.

One of the toughest forms of kickboxing in Southeast Asia, the sport is traditionally male dominated. Yet, as gender roles shift in Myanmar, a growing number of women are entering the ring.

Win Zin Oo insists that his gym does not discriminate, and says that half of those who train there are women.
