Equality For All
What does gender equality mean to you?
This November in Bougainville, a place notoriously dangerous for women, a dedicated team of activists will champion the rights of women and girls. The activists will challenge the attitudes and beliefs that result in more than two in three Bougainville women being subjected to physical and sexual abuse.
Many of the activists are men. Make a donation today in support of Women Human Rights Defenders and male advocates.
November 25th is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Join us in building a reality where women and girls can access their rights, be free, equal and safe. Donate today.
These activists are Women’s Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) and male advocates who work with IWDA’s partner Nazareth Centre for Rehabilitation (NCfR). Their message is clear – that gender equality means all of us. It’s a message they are using to educate communities to prevent further damaging attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate the cycle of abuse. WHRDs and male advocates have embraced their roles, and are supporting a new generation of men who respect the rights of women and girls.
“To me, equality is empowerment and safety for women and girls. I saw the violence and abuse that women face, but didn’t know how to help them. Now I am an advocate to end the violence.”
– Alphonse Pemuko, NCfR Male Advocacy Program Coordinator
We all have a role to play in challenging the toxic attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate violence against women and girls, preventing them from participating fully and safely as equals in society. We all need to be Women’s Human Rights Defenders.
Donate now and create a safer future for women and girls to thrive.
Gender-based violence is a complex and horrific problem affecting millions of diverse women, men, girls and boys globally. IWDA – with our partners – believe that we ALL have a role to play in changing the damaging attitudes and behaviours that put women and girls at risk. The more boys and men can be supported to change their behaviours and attitudes, the more lives we can save from gender-based violence.
