The steadily increasing level of women’s political participation in Bougainville has inspired discussion of reform at a conference in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

Francesca Semoso, former deputy speaker of the Bougainville parliament has called for the Solomon Islands Parliament to replicate inclusive measures such as reserve seats for women and quotas on female candidates in political parties.

This move is supported by Government authorities and draft amendments are expected to be completed by this time next year, with the intention of having a more inclusive model implemented in time for the National General Election in 2018.

IWDA’s Funding Leadership and Opportunities for Women program continues to support program partners across the Pacific in facilitating forums for discussion.
