Training in Trauma

May 21, 2015

Rates of violence against women in Papua New Guinea are extreme. IWDA’s Funding Leadership Opportunities for Women initiative supports five local women’s rights organisations to train Women Human Rights Defenders in trauma counselling, action planning and peacebuilding.

These organisations include Voice for Change, the Nazareth Centre for Rehabilitation, as well as three partners who are members of the Highlands Women Human Rights Defenders network – Kup Women for Peace, Kafe Urban Settlers Women’s Association (KUSWA), and Minj Family Support Centre.

Eighteen Women Human Rights Defenders participated in follow-up trauma counselling and an additional 20 women were involved in peacebuilding training. As a result, counsellors are equipped to provide support to women who have experienced violence in a country with extreme rates of violence against women.
