The Rise of Social Media in the Pacific

September 25, 2015

Australian National University’s State of the Pacific Conference 2015 brought together academics, leaders and civil society representatives to showcase and discuss research on the Pacific region.

IWDA’s Funding Leadership and Opportunities for Women program, in partnership with Fiji Women’s Rights Movement facilitated research designed to explore the rise of digital activism and political participation online in the Pacific.

The report, “Political Social Media Campaigning in Fiji 2014 Elections” uncovered insights that reveal an increasing trend towards digital activism. Researchers suggested that the Pacific’s restrictive media environment has led to an increase in the uptake of social media for political participation and citizen journalism.
