The Benefits of Balance
August 31, 2015
Increasing women’s leadership and political participation in the Pacific is not just good for women, it can benefit everyone. Women’s contribution brings diverse perspectives to a range of issues, improving governance, stimulating the economy and reducing poverty.
Despite these benefits, women in the Pacific and across the globe continue to be severely underrepresented. Improving women’s leadership should not rest on the shoulders of women alone, and attitudes need to change so that women’s participation is embraced rather than resisted. IWDA’s Funding Leadership and Opportunities for Women program works with local civil society organisations in Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands to encourage women to pursue leadership and convert inequitable attitudes held by both men and women that inform resistance.
