Promoting female parliamentary participation in the Pacific

September 23, 2015

The Pacific has the lowest levels of female representation in parliament in the world, with only one female member out of 50 in the Solomon Islands.

To encourage more Pacific Islanders to engage in political discussion, the Strongim Mere project was launched in the Solomon Islands. This 10-part radio series aims to empower more women to have a voice in decision-making processes and leadership positions.

According to Nicolas Burniat, UN Women’s Deputy Representative at the Multi-Country Office in Fiji, radio is a very powerful medium in the Pacific, and will trigger discussions about women and leadership across the region.

Though originally broadcast in the local language of Pidgin, an English version has been made available online. Listen to all 10 episodes of the series here.
