Preserving authentic female voices

“Our collective and historic failure to preserve authentic female voices for posterity feeds into, and is informed by, persistent perceptions that women’s leadership is abnormal, that women’s voices lack authority, and that women’s right to occupy the public space is questionable.”

Next year’s International Women’s Day will be celebrated with a collection of all-female political quotations. Produced by the Centre for Women and Democracy, the collection will include lesser-known words of wisdom from remarkable women to contrast the Oxford Dictionary of Political Quotations, in which there are merely 136 female voices compared to 1,330 male.

We have failed to hear the voices of many extraordinary women that deserve to be heard, and now is the time to correct this.
