Positives and Pitfalls of Digital Activism

Research supported by IWDA’s Funding Leadership and Opportunities for Women program, in partnership with Fiji Women’s Rights Movement, has highlighted the ‘positives and pitfalls’ of using social media as a tool for political participation.
Our research has identified the generational barriers to political participation facing youth in Fiji and Bougainville, while this report reveals how social media is providing a space for young people’s voices to be heard. Additionally, social media is being used to hold governments accountable by monitoring and commenting on policies, decisions and the opinions that inform them. However, accusations of censorship and the gendered behavior of digital activism represent problematic areas in the realm of social media
