Hon. Dr. Jiko Luveni, Speaker of the House in the Fijian Parliament, presented the opening address for the Fiji Young Women’s Forum where she outlined the key objectives and purpose of the capacity building workshop.
The Speaker of the House acknowledged the progress that Fiji has made as a democracy but also highlighted the challenges that persist in Fiji. Hon. Luveni noted the importance of women’s input in the policy-making process and emphasised the power of being informed in reshaping policy and legislation to better serve both men and women.
“To be informed is the foremost criterion to be effective in influencing policy… in terms of influencing legislations, it is important that you know about your Parliament, its processes and procedures and most importantly the work it is doing.”
