Help Women Still at Risk during COVID-19
An urgent video message from Emily Miller, IWDA’s Director of Systemic Change and Partnerships:
As the COVID-19 pandemic has unfolded, we have all seen the shocking consequences for women and girls.
Not only have our initial fears been realised, but in some cases, the reality is even worse than anyone anticipated. Rates of domestic violence have continued to surge dramatically in the last six months.
In Fiji, calls to the national domestic violence helpline increased by 500% in the space of three months. This is devastating.
And according to Thai government figures, domestic violence cases have doubled since the onset of COVID-19. The United Nations has described this horrifying trend as a ‘shadow pandemic’.
Please donate before 31 October to help support women still at risk during the COVID-19 emergency.
ALFeLa (Asisténsia Legál ba Feto no Labarik) is one of IWDA’s partner organisations that provides life-saving support to help women and children access a fair and formal justice system in Timor-Leste.
Even before COVID-19, rates of violence against women and girls in Timor-Leste were very high, with almost 60% of women aged 15-45 reporting some form of physical or sexual violence from their partner.
The lockdown has led to a distressing rise in cases of violence against women and girls in Timor-Leste, and an increased need for the urgent legal support and advocacy that ALFeLa provide.
Your donation can help a woman access urgent legal support to leave an abusive partner and access a safe place to live. It can make all the difference.
