Fiji’s Attorney General asks police to take violence against women seriously

The Fijian Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has urged police officers to take cases of violence against women and children seriously and deal with them urgently at a Police workshop on Gender, Violence against Women, Human Rights and Legal.

He told the workshop that violence against women is a public issue and not something to be swept aside.

“You are enforcers of the law, you are the people to whom complaints come to.

“So, therefore, it is very critically important to not only understand how the law operates but to have a deep philosophical understanding as to why it is an offence in the first place,” he said.
