A Symptom of the System

Solomon Island’s Director of Governance, Calvin Ziru recognises the disconnect between what people want – which is more women in parliament – and what people do at the polls. This is a symptom of the system, which discourages women from entering the political arena to begin with, and influences voter attitudes.
IWDA’s Funding Leadership and Opportunities for Women program commissioned a study investigating Public Perceptions of Women in Leadership in Fiji in collaboration with Fiji Women’s Forum. Additional work of this type across the Pacific would help to inform the next steps for change.
In a radio interview, Ziru declares that “the system has to change, the rules have to change, the laws have to change”
